The latest work by French master of sensuality François Ozon is a visually striking adaptation of Camus’s The Stranger. Algiers, 1938. Meursault, a young clerk, attends his mother’s funeral without shedding a single tear. Soon after the funeral, he returns to his daily routine and begins a love affair with his colleague, Marie. Meursault’s quiet everyday life is disrupted by his neighbour Raymond, who draws him into shady dealings. One fateful day on the beach, a tragic event will change Meursault’s life forever. This film about the absurdity of human existence premiered at the Venice Film Festival.

François Ozon

François Ozon (Paris, 1967) is a French film director and screenwriter. He studied film in Paris and built his status as one of the leading directors of his generation with the fairy-tale thriller Criminal Lovers (1998), the drama Water Drops on Burning Rocks (2002), based on the play by R. W. Fassbinder, with the subtle drama Under the Sand (2000), and the film 8 Women (2002 – Silver Bear for Best Actress, ex aequo). Alongside the inventive fusion of modernist tradition with American and French genre films, Ozon is particularly admired for his skilful portrayal of compelling female characters.
