Croatian actress Tesa Litvan presents Diva Futura at Kinoteka, the main program continues with Thai mega-hit How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies and the second Lithuanian title in competition Drowning Dry, the program Together Again offers up Santosh by ZFF winner Sandhya Suri, and Dag Johan Haugerud’s Love, while KinoKino features the animated gem Living Large. The Industry section covers the Small Cinemas international conference, and the masterclass by director and screenwriter Pavel Marek
On Thursday, the 22nd ZFF Feature Film competition brings the Thai box office hit How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (10:30 and 18:30), and Lithuanian drama Drowning Dry (13:00 and 21:00), at Cinestar Branimir. Director Pat Boonnitipat’s feature debut How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, arrives on the big screen at ZFF after sweeping across not only Thai but Asian cinemas by and large, with a story of the ultimate slacker who quits his job to take care of his sick grandmother, with the sole aim of getting his hands on her inheritance. Drowning Dry is the second film by Lithuanian director Laurynas Bareiša, whose debut was named Best Film in Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti. The film follows the far-reaching consequences of a family vacation, while the puzzle of the entire event gets gradually revealed.
Also scheduled for Thursday at Cinestar are the films from the PLUS and Together Again competition programs. In the race for the Young Jury PLUS Award, Good One, which premiered at Sundance, is on the program at 18:00. Director India Donaldson’s feature debut is a funny, down-to-earth and deeply compassionate portrait of girlhood and the turning point in the parent-child relationship. Screening in the Together Again program at Cinestar, Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s Love (at 20:30), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, centres on the intriguing friendship between a doctor, Marianne, and a medical technician named Toro, questioning the social norms around the idea of love.
As every day, the festival program at Kinoteka kicks off at 11:00 with the KinoKino offerings for the youngest cinephiles, and on Thursday expect a special animated treat – Living Large. The sweet and humorous coming-of-age animated feature tackles childhood obesity in a gentle and layered way, arriving in Zagreb after screenings at prestigious world festivals in Locarno, Karlovy Vary and Annecy. The screenings at Kinoteka continue with a feature from The Great 5 program, Diva Futura (at 18:00). This biographical film about the birth of the flamboyant Italian porn industry of the 1980s and 90s premiered in Venice, and will be presented to the Zagreb audience by Croatian actress starring in the film, Tesa Litvan.
Lastly, at 21:30 Kinoteka offers a selection of shorts from the International Short and Checkers competition – the Spanish The Idea of the Island, Swedish Deck 5B and French Alarms, as well as domestic titles One Day Something (Terrible) Is Going to Happen by Dalija Dozet and Sara Alavanić’s Spot.
At the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU), the program begins at 16:00 with A Cat’s Life from the KinoKino program, continues with a title in the Together Again competition, the crime thriller Santosh (at 18:00), a dramatic and disquieting look into the world of law, castes, religion and gender relations in a stratified Indian society, and ends with a feature from the Network of Festivals in the Adriatic Region – Three Days of Fish (at 20:30) of Dutch director Peter Hoogendoorn, in which we follow the reunion of father and son during the father’s medical treatment.
At 18:00, the Festivals in the Spotlight program continues at Dokukino KIC, this time with a selection of short films from European Film Academy – EFA Shorts, including some of the most acclaimed and awarded short films from last year.
The Department for Culture and Communication of the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO), in a partnership with ZFF and the Academy of Dramatic Art, holds the 15th International Small Cinemas Conference (9:30 – 17:00 at F22) as part of the Industry section, while Czech director and screenwriter Pavel Marek will hold a masterclass titled From Shorts to Feature at Dokukino KIC.
