ZFF in Solidarity with Palestine

A particular place in the dynamic programme of the 23rd Zagreb Film Festival is taken by some of the most interesting contemporary Palestinian films. The selection is part of a broader global call for action, aiming to familiarise Croatian audiences with Palestine as a country of exceptional and rich culture and history.

As early as Sunday, 2 November, in association with Restart and Free Palestine Initiative, a screening of the film Bye Bye Tiberias will take place at Dokukino KIC. This is only one among the hundreds of screenings set to take place on that day throughout the world as part of the event Palestine Cinema Days, launched in 2014 to stimulate the development and popularisation of Palestinian cinema and culture. One of the roles of cinema is to raise awareness about the burning social issues and topics. At a time of the worst possible escalation of Israeli genocide over the Palestinian people, it is more pivotal than ever to give space to Palestinian voices which otherwise have trouble finding their way to a broader public.

Therefore, the festival (10-16 November) screens some of the most relevant recent Palestinian titles. In the Together Again programme we will be watching the Tunisian winner of the Venice Jury Grand Prix, The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. This extremely significant docu-drama uses a combination of real audio recordings and re-enactments to portray the shocking murder of the little girl Hind Rajab by the Israeli military, from the point of view of Red Crescent volunteers in Palestine. The International Short Film category screens the Palme d’Or winner for best short film, I’m Glad You’re Dead Now by Tawfeek Barhom, and the ZFF Travels section again features Scandar Copti’s popular title Happy Holidays, this time to out-of-Zagreb audiences.

The revenues from the screenings of The Voice of Hind Rajab will be donated to the medical charity Pal Humanity, active in the field in Gaza, where medical professionals, a special target of genocidal actions, ongoingly and unrelentingly risk lives caring for others.

Zagreb Film Festival takes place from 10 to 16 November, with the support of the City Office for Culture and Civil Society, Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Creative Europe – MEDIA Sub-programme, Kultura nova foundation and City of Zagreb Tourist Board.
