Renowned for his rich cinematic career as much as for a past checkered with violence and vice, legendary film director Esteban Martínez – played with brilliance by Javier Bardem – offers his daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo – The Room Next Door, ZFF 2024) a role in his new film, on the pretext of assisting her stagnating acting career. But life together on the film set will force them to reopen old wounds. Premiering at Cannes, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new film The Beloved is a discerning and intense psychological study of a laboured father-daughter confrontation that fiercely rejects romanticised notions about artistic creation. ZFF has previously screened four of Sorogoyen’s films, namely The Beasts, Mother, The Realm and May God Save Us.
