Hoda, an Iranian refugee living in Berlin, is pregnant and in love with Boris, a queer man from Serbia. The two decide to marry and raise a child together, ready to redefine their notion of family. In their bold feature debut, I Plant My Hand in the Garden, directing duo Hoda Taheri and Boris Hadžija explore whether something unfamiliar and unconventional – like the relationship between the two main characters – can sprout roots at all. Having premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, from its very opening scenes the film blurs the boundary between reality and fiction, questioning inherited notions of love, parenthood and belonging.
