Eleven-year-old Adela is a Roma girl who lives in a poor neighbourhood of Skopje with her mother and older sister Zara. When the family runs into financial trouble, her mother becomes convinced that the only solution is to sell Zara at a bridal fair. Adela refuses to accept such a fate for her still underage sister and decides to take matters into her own hands. Dina Duma’s sophomore feature Skateboarding Is Not for Girls is a touching coming-of-age story about a girl torn between traditional and modern values. It had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Nora Ephron Award celebrating the female perspective on film, and went on to win the Special Prize in the Youth Perspectives program at Sarajevo.
