Twenty-year-old Luigi lives with his mother Licia (Barbara Ronchi – Kidnapped, ZFF 2023) and his brother Alessandro. The three share a close bond, yet Luigi feels something is missing. Searching for a sense of belonging, he joins a radical right-wing group. One day, Franco, the long-absent, violent “head of the family”, suddenly returns. He wants his family back, but his nature has not changed. Based on Luigi Celeste’s autobiography, this Italian Oscar contender is an intriguing melodrama with elements of psychological thriller, horror, and social drama. It premiered in Venice.

Francesco Costabile studied at the Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome. He made his feature debut with The Code of Silence (2022), which screened at Berlinale, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and Raindance Film Festival. Familia is the winner of the 2024 Venice Film Festival Orizzonti Best Actor Award.
