From Shorts to Feature: Pavel Marek

In cooperation with the MIDPOINT Institute and with the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), ZFF will host a masterclass by Czech director and screenwriter Pavel Marek. Many prominent filmmakers began their careers making short films. Their works often reveal a spontaneous arsenal of formal devices that foreshadow a certain style or thematic focus. By transitioning to feature films, harmonising a unique vision of the world with conceptual dramatic thinking becomes vital. In the masterclass lecture by director Pavel Marek, we will watch several short films and reflect on his “signature style” and the different strategies in making a short or a feature film.

PAVEL MAREK

Pavel Marek graduated from the Faculty of Computer Engineering in the Czech Republic, and then completed his studies at the Directing Department at FAMU. During the communist era, he co-founded the underground film association Bulsitfilm, in which he started collaborating with surrealist filmmakers and appeared as an actor in the films of the legendary director Jan Švankmajer. His feature-length graduation film Dead Beetle (1998) won the Volkskrant Critics Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Later he would focus mainly on documentary films and writing scripts for the animation series Pat and Mat. He is a professor at the Directing Department at FAMU, Head of Studies of MIDPOINT Shorts, and also works as a script consultant.
