In the late 1980s, a team of Ukrainian filmmakers undertook several film expeditions to remote areas of Siberia. Their forgotten film reels had been rediscovered in Kyiv in 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This is a starting point for a film essay that interrogates Russian imperialism, environmental destruction, and the ongoing oppression of indigenous peoples in Russia’s colonies.

Oleksiy Radynski is a filmmaker based in Kyiv. His films have been screened at the Berlinale, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Doclisboa, DokuFest, Sheffield Doc Fest, etc. His films received multiple awards, including the Grand Prix at the Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen for Chornobyl 22.
