In cooperation with the Filmmakers Association of Croatia, ZFF will host a masterclass by the award-winning Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson, whose films have been featured in ZFF’s programs several times. As many as two of Rúnarsson’s films have been made in co-production with Croatia (Sparrows, When the Light Breaks), one of which, When the Light Breaks, will screen in this year’s ZFF program Together Again. The masterclass will be moderated by Croatian director and producer Daria Blažević, and in the conversation with her, Rúnarsson will self-reflect on his cinema and career, addressing his artistic approach and the challenges and advantages of taking on the dual role of screenwriter and director. Using examples from his own films, the filmmaker will also refer to the unique circumstances of working in the film industry, in the context of so-called small cinemas such as Iceland and Croatia.
The masterclass will be preceded by a screening of the feature When the Light Breaks, screening in the competition section Together Again.

Rúnar Rúnarsson
Rúnar Rúnarsson (Reykjavik, 1977) is a well-known name to ZFF audiences, who have had the opportunity to follow his career since his first steps in short film in the early years of the festival. His shorts were followed by feature-film festival laureates – Volcano (ZFF 2012), Sparrows (ZFF 2015; San Sebastián 2015 – Golden Shell for Best Film) and Echo (ZFF 2021 ), and When the Light Breaks (ZFF 2024; Cannes – Un Certain Regard.

Daria Blažević
Daria Blažević is a film director, producer, and cultural worker. She graduated in film directing from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb and the Film Academy Vienna. She is the president of the Cinema Club Zagreb and head of the artistic organisation Kadromat, where she works as a producer. She is a member of the Croatian Freelance Artists Association and of the Croatian Film Authors’ Guild, where she is also the president of the copyright protection board.
