My Favourite Cake
Premiering at this year’s Berlinale, where it was awarded the FIPRESCI and Ecumenical Jury prizes, My Favourite Cake is a touching romantic tragicomedy about finding love and a new zest for life in old age. Seventy-year-old Mahin has been living alone in Tehran since her husband died and her daughter moved to Europe. When a couple of friends encourage her to break her solitary routine and revitalize her love life, Mahin goes out into the street in search of a man. As she opens herself up to new romance, what begins as an unexpected encounter quickly evolves into an unpredictable evening that she will never forget. The film drew the anger of the Iranian authorities, due to the free portrayal of the female protagonist and her confrontation with the Iranian “morality police”.
