Happyend
*In competition for the Young Jury PLUS Award
In near-future Tokyo, earthquakes are a daily occurrence and repressive security measures spread across the country as society becomes increasingly polarised. Teenagers Yuta and Kou are best friends, nearing the end of high school. One night, they pull an unsavoury prank on the principal, which leads to unexpected consequences, including the introduction of a rigorous surveillance system at the school. While You accepts the changes passively, almost without noticing, Kou gets increasingly frustrated with society and turns to student activism and new acquaintances. For the first time in their lives, the two friends will be forced to face their mutual differences, which they had ignored until then. This dystopian Japanese drama premiered in Venice and then screened in Toronto.
