Kidnapped

In his latest work, Italian film legend Marco Bellocchio tells the story of a real case of kidnapping of a Jewish boy by the Catholic Church. The year is 1858. The Jewish family Mortara lead a peaceful life in Bologna, until papal soldiers appear at their door demanding that they hand over their seven-year-old son, Edgar. It seems the family servant secretly baptized the boy fearing for his soul, so the law requires Edgar be raised in the Catholic faith. Desperate, his parents do everything in their power to get their son back, and along the way receive support from the wider community. The film premiered at Cannes and went on to screen at Toronto.
