By day, young Romanian woman Gianina (Ana Dumitrașcu) works as a housekeeper for a French family, while by night she rehearses an adaptation of Octave Mirbeau’s The Diary of a Chambermaid with an amateur theatre group. The latest film by two-time ZFF laureate Radu Jude (The Happiest Girl in the World, ZFF 2009 – Special Mention; Everyone in Our Family, ZFF 2012 – Golden Pram) is a satirical, vehement and at moments unexpectedly tender interpretation of the eponymous French novel, in which the director dissects the decaying bourgeois society and examines power relations between France and Romania. The influence of Brecht and Godard is evident, yet grounded at every turn in the distinctive dark humour of one of Europe’s leading filmmakers.
