After the death of his parents, Mihai (Sebastian Stan; The Apprentice, 2024) and his wife Lisbet (Renate Reinsve; The Worst Person in the World, ZFF 2021; Sentimental Value, ZFF 2025) leave everything behind in Romania and move with their children to a remote Norwegian village, where the family bonds with their neighbours. But when their daughter Elia’s teacher notices her bruises, the seemingly idyllic impression soon crumbles. Winner of the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes, Fjord, the new film by acclaimed Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, ZFF 2007) confronts audiences with the complex ethical dilemmas of contemporary society – unassumingly and without embellishment – leaving them to draw their own conclusions.

Cristian Mungiu

Cristian Mungiu (Iași, 1968) studied English literature before enrolling at the National University of Theatre and Film (UNATC), where he made several short films during his studies. His first feature Occident (2002, ZFF 2014 – program My First Film: Romania) was a major success in Romania, but it was his second feature, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), that earned him a series of international accolades, including the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the European Film Academy Awards for Best Film and Best Director. His film Fjord (2026) has brought him his second Palme d'Or, cementing his status as one of the most distinguished Romanian directors of all time.
