In May 1985, the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus is held at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. Among those who have come to the match with their families are Marie, 39, daughter of the Mayor of Brussels, and Luca Rossi, a 31-year-old journalist covering the game for Italian television. When riots break out before the match, leaving dozens deceased, Marie and Luca find themselves torn between professional duty, family, and their own humanity. Premiered in Berlin, Teodora Ana Mihai’s Heysel 85 is a political thriller in which a sporting spectacle becomes the stage for a state of emergency, governmental failure, and irreplaceable loss.
