Rio is a withdrawn young man from a village in central Istria who lives with his grandmother and his dementia-affected grandfather, earning a living at a coastal hotel while occasionally dabbling in petty theft. One evening, a seasonal worker from the hotel’s beauty salon catches him in the act and proposes an unusual business arrangement. Winner of the FIPRESCI Award in the Proxima Competition at the Karlovy Vary IFF, where it also had its world premiere, Croatian director Mate Ugrin’s debut feature Petty Thieves is a tense and atmospheric portrait of the daily lives of seasonal workers who find meaning and intimacy in unexpected places.
