As dementia gradually erodes Leslie’s (Anna Calder-Marshall; Wuthering Heights, 1970) ability to express her inner world, her concerned daughter Amanda (Juliette Binoche; The English Patient, 1997) must learn to balance love against the fragile boundaries of care, protection, and autonomy. Lance Hammer’s second film Queen at Sea (Silver Bear – Jury Prize, Berlin 2026) is a deeply moving meditation on old age that deftly avoids sentimentality, confronting viewers with the question of what it actually means to act in someone’s best interest. For their roles as a married couple, Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay (Doctor Zhivago, 1965) were awarded the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance at this year’s Berlinale.
