Fifteen years after winning the Golden Pram for Best Feature with Michael at the 2011 ZFF, Austrian director Markus Schleinzer returns to the festival with his latest work, once again titled after its central protagonist. This time the story follows Rose, a woman in the early 17th century who disguises herself as a man, claiming to be the heir of an abandoned estate. And while Schleinzer’s visual language leads the audience to conclude they are watching a bleak historical drama, it soon becomes clear that Rose deftly eludes any categorisation. Sandra Hüller (Toni Erdmann, ZFF 2016; Anatomy of a Fall, ZFF 2023) won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance in Berlin for her role as Rose.
