Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, but over the years their paths and careers diverged. Martha became a war reporter, and Ingrid a novelist, known for her great fear of death. After a number of years, the two reconnect and grow closer through shared memories, anecdotes and conversations about art and movies. But their renewed closeness will be tested by Martha’s unexpected request. Winner of this year’s Golden Lion at Venice and the Brian Award, Pedro Almodóvar’s new work is a masterful drama about life, death and the responsibilities of friendship and is also his first full-length film in the English language.
One of the greatest living directors and screenwriters by and large, Pedro Almodóvar (1949) transformed the landscape of Spanish and world cinema with his distinctive oeuvre. Known for his infatuation with female characters, depictions of the fluidity of gender identities and sexuality, and his criticism of patriarchal and conservative traditions, Almodóvar has crafted an idiosyncratic style in which genres, pop art, irony, camp and melodrama blend and mix throughout his professional career spanning almost half a century. He is the winner of two Oscars and a plethora of other prestigious awards. His filmography includes: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Live Flesh (1997), All About My Mother (1999), Talk to Her (2002), Bad Education (2004) and many more.
