Intercultural Film Program

The 24th Zagreb Film Festival presents the third edition of the program Welcome to ZFF! – a project that aims to make the festival screenings more accessible to the new fellow residents of Zagreb for whom the language barrier might present a challenge in participating in the cultural life of the city. With the support of the City Office for Culture and Civil Society of the City of Zagreb, this year we present five films with Arabic or Ukrainian subtitles, giving audiences the opportunity to discover a diversity of cinematic stories – from contemporary Croatian titles and classics of domestic cinema to international titles for the youngest viewers.
The selected titles include contemporary Croatian films Small Things and Mom’s Alive Today, which will be available with Ukrainian subtitles, as well as Small Things with Arabic subtitles. The screening of Small Things with Ukrainian subtitles will take place on Wednesday, 11 November, at 18:30 at Kaptol Boutique Cinema; and with Arabic subtitles on Thursday, 12 November, at 18:00 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Mom’s Alive Today screens on Sunday, 15 November, at 18:30 at Kaptol Boutique Cinema, with Ukrainian subtitles.
The program also includes Rondo, a classic of Croatian cinema, which festival audiences will be able to see with Arabic subtitles on Saturday, 14 November, at 18:30 at Kaptol Boutique Cinema.
A special place on the program is reserved for the youngest viewers. The selected titles also include the Swiss film Splish Splash Forever! and the Dutch title Lampie. Both films are part of the KinoKino children’s program, and in the Welcome to ZFF! program they are screening with Ukrainian and Arabic subtitles respectively, in order to make them accessible to a wider audience. Splish Splash Forever! is scheduled for Saturday, 14 November, at 16:00 at MSU, with Ukrainian subtitles, while Lampie is screening on Sunday, 15 November, at 16:00 at MSU, with Arabic subtitles.
The program Welcome to ZFF! seeks to remove language barriers that can make it harder for our new fellow residents to participate in Zagreb’s cultural life and to bring the festival film program closer to them. By screening selected films with Arabic and Ukrainian subtitles, we aim to broaden the festival audience and make ZFF accessible to as many viewers as possible, regardless of the language they speak. We believe that the accessibility of cultural content is an important step towards a more inclusive cultural life on the city and towards creating a space in which different audiences can participate in cinematic experience on equal terms.
